A Cupcake for Katniss Everdeen

(Maybe she wouldn't be so hungry.)

On reading and writing different Genres:

I love reading books as well as writing them. I love books that make me laugh.
The Spellman Files (Mystery series by Lisa Lutz)
Books that make me fall in love.
Perfect Chemistry (YA by Simone Elkeles)

Thrill me, chill me, glue-me-to-the-couch kind of books.
Getaway (Mystery Thriller by Lisa Brackmann)

I feel the same way about movies. Make me laugh. ( Ms. Congeniality)

Thrill me, chill me... (A Perfect Getaway)

Rip my heart out with a hot YA book adaptation. (The Hunger Games)

I wrote my first book - Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys. It's a snarky mystery. I queried a whole bunch of agents, signed with an agent and then waited for her to sell it. Which didn't happen.

Thankfully Krill Press loved the story and published my novel.

In the meantime, I wrote something completely different - The Messenger's Handbook - a Young Adult time travel romantic thriller.  Again, I queried agents. There was a lot silence sprinkled with multiple, "Nos." One agent said, "Yes." But there were too many strings attached - had to turn him down.

Then a funny thing happened. Readers liked the first Cupcakes book and wanted the next novel in the series. Which... I hadn't finished yet! I put that ms aside, and wrote Cupcakes, Sales, and Cocktails - A Novella. (Even included the first chapter of the next novel - Cupcakes, Pies, and Hot Guys.)

More details in a different blogpost on how and why I decided to stop waiting and publish The Messenger's Handbook which has been compared to The Hunger Games. On sale now for 99 cents.

I like writing different genres. I think Katniss Everdeen would love a cupcake.

What genres do you read? What kinds of movies do you like?

  1. I mostly read paranormals, fantasies, and sci-fi... gotta have something of the impossible in it to hold my interest. I do read an occasional contemporary or historical, but they're not my favorite. Just purchased The Messenger's Handbook :-)
