Joe Wilson

who is a storyteller (writer/director/video editor/camera operator/producer).

Hi Joe!

Thanks for being here today. Can you please tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi! Thanks for having me! I love what you've done with your font. 

I started telling stories using the still image.  As a photographer, I met lots of different kinds of people because I had a camera around my neck and I heard a lot of stories I never would've without taking pictures. Photography led to me drawing, creating installation art, performance art, acting, doing stand up comedy, screenwriting and playwriting. I've also worked as a private investigator, waiter and bartender, where I met more people, including members of organized crime, and heard even more stories. 

After banging my head against the entertainment industrial complex as a screenwriter and actor in Los Angeles, I could see the historical changes happening in telling stories online and decided to go completely indie as a storyteller, making stories with the help of the audience who wants to see them. Since making that decision, I've created two online series (Vampire Mob & PlayShorts), met thousands of people online and have had the most fun I've ever had as a storyteller. 

Okay Joe – you’re on my radar because you’re working on something super cool called 

Vampire Mob.

True! Vampire Mob is the first series I created (which you can watch watch right now, with swearing http://www.VampireMob.com) and was to have a third season but we lost the great Marcia Wallace (The Simpsons, The Bob Newhart Show) who plays one of the main characters. With a script that is longer than the first two seasons combined and that had numerous scenes including Marcia's character I had to decide to recast her role, rewrite season three to address her character's absence or maybe stop telling the story. 

One idea that was floating around was to create Vampire Mob as a graphic novel and that seemed like one that would allow me to keep Marcia's character "alive" and to continue telling the story I wanted to, so that's what's happening, right now! 

What was your inspiration for Vampire Mob? 

While I was working as a private investigator in the intellectual property field I had a case that involved a mafia-related term and during the investigation I had a conversation with someone who thought I was someone else (part of the job). I said something along the lines of "There's so many vampire stories, and we haven't had a mafia story in a while, where's the vampire mob story?" 

None of the vampire stories on screen appealed to me and I thought about trying to find another way into the genre as a writer, to keep some of the basic elements of the mythology, but lose all the mysticism. 

I started cooking Vampire Mob as a short film script and the first realization of the story was as a short play called "Craig's Other List," which was performed twice. I continued to see the world growing as I developed VMob and thought telling the story as an episodic would give me the opportunity to tell a bigger story. 

I made the first season with my own money and the amazing VMob audience contributed the budget to make the second season of Vampire Mob, which would not exist without their help. It's been one helluva ride making two seasons of Vampire Mob!

After working with 21 actors and a giant dog making Vampire Mob as an online series, I've begun the process of creating Vampire Mob as a graphic novel, working with artist JM Ringuet & creative consultant Corey Blake. 

The script for issue 1 is locked-ish and JM has created the cover, which I've been showing parts of on Twitter (@VampireMob).

I will be having parts of the Vampire Mob graphic novel created to show the audience who I will be asking for help to create the first issue, initially digitally and, budget allowing, having copies printed. 

Why—out of all the ideas swimming around in your brain were you compelled to work on this?

It seemed like it would be a fun.  

Vampire Mob has been a life changing project, one that taught me more than anything I've ever worked on and one that allowed me to find an audience for the stories I tell. It was also a story I wrote with Marcia Wallace in mind, before ever asking her to be in it. She said yes! 

I love the giant ensemble of flawed characters who inhabit the world of Vampire Mob. It's still a fun story to tell there's a whole lot more of it waiting to be told. I can't wait!

My Writing Process Blog Tour (And a Bookbub Sale!)

I started writing non-fiction and essays. I discovered and pitched the Erin Brockovich story which inspired me to attend UCLA screenwriting classes. I wrote a few screenplays that went -- nowhere. I finally saw the light and wrote my first novel - Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys (A Romantic, Comedic Annie Graceland Mystery.) A small press published it in 2010. At the end of my contract in 2012, I decided to leave that press and self-publish. What a great decision!

What am I working on?

In terms of novels I'm working on three very different projects.

Part-Time Princess (Ladies in Waiting #1) is a New Adult Romantic Comedy to be published Spring, 2014. It's a mash-up of Ms. Congeniality and Bridesmaids.

The Messenger (Mortal Beloved,Book Two) is the second book in a Young Adult Time Travel Romantic saga. 

It's going to be shopped as a TV show! Yay!

Cupcakes, Bars and Rock Stars (A Romantic, Comedic Annie Graceland Mystery #5) is a snarky mystery about the mis-adventures of Annie Graceland, a slightly psychic baker who not only talks to ghosts but is guilted into solving their murders.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Part-time Princess is New Adult Romance, but it's heavy on the comedy. All my NA romances actually have plots. They're NOT just excuses to write sex scenes!

Messenger has a solid foot in present day but incorporates historical settings and figures. It is filled with romance, packed with adventure, but it is NOT dystopian!

Cupcakes has a little more romance and snarky humor than your average 'cozy' mystery. Cupcakes readers like their guys hot, their cocktails crisp and their humor not all that 'precious'.

Why do I write what I do?

I love writing funny novels. Readers enjoyed the adventures of Annie Graceland in Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys and encouraged me to turn it into a series. (I listened to you all - thank you!)

But I was also dying to write YA genre - hence The Messenger series.

The strong romantic element in Messenger made me want to try my hand at a real romance. 

New Adult Romance genre explores the ages between eighteen and twenty-five-ish. It's chock full of  angst-filled moments like: leaving home. Finding yourself. Falling in love. Experimenting. NA Romance seemed like the perfect fit for me. I loved writing The Story of You and Me and will continue writing this genre.

How does my writing process work?

I'm definitely more a write by the seat of my pants kind of girl. I do however obsess over details. I needed to nail the history for Messenger and be accurate with medical descriptions for Story. When I write comedy I find I have to layer it in day by day. The humor does not happen over night.

Mama moves to Assisted Living

There comes a time when we've had enough rules, regulations and the should haves of life and love and parents and children and restrictions and society and rules and dogma and religion and politics. 

Mama's 86th Birthday

Somewhere in this heart-stopping moment we decide (or don't decide when life interrupts with the unexpected death or huge life-transition of a parent, spouse, a sibling because life decides it for us,) to take a deep breath and...

break FREE, make a run for it and leave home, safety, all that is known, and race toward...

...the fearful, the unthinkable, the unknowable, the hasn't-even-been-imagined yet.

and HOLY CRAP it's so FREAKING SCARY that

our breath catches. Our hearts race. Our brains spin. But maybe, just maybe it will be okay...

Because maybe we will find peace, happiness. We'll discover that 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' was always, really, right here here in the homes we grew up in. In our back yards. On our front lawns.

And most likely our journey ends where it began. No matter our circumstances, I'll venture that most of us were born into love. I'm thinking that when we take our last breath -- to love we shall return. Or -- at least that's the way I hope it works.

I spent Sunday afternoon updating my blog and it's getting much closer to looking less befuddled.

Oh wait, that's me.

So now, before I go work out to avoid my head flying off my tight neck like the top of a Pez Dispenser, I thought I'd give you something fun to look at. Just a little eye candy.

My New Adult / Mature YA romance, The Story of You and Me, is set in Southern California. There are four young guys who are 'Drivers'. They help out when USCLA students or friends can't drive because they've partied a little too hard. And...  sometimes they help out with other problems for other reasons. (Which you could read about in the book.)
